employee_engagementSince CPP released the Work Engagement Profile, it’s become more evident that Employee Engagement is a hot topic - and one that everyone is looking to better understand. A lot of organizations like to say their employees are “engaged,” but how do they really know? And more importantly, does it really matter?

I would like to think I am a “good” enough employee that even if I was bored, tired, sick-of-work, I would still be producing enough quality material to hide my lack of engagement, but engagement is about more than just a quality of work. Engagement effects everything from how you handle conflicts, to the effort you put into solving problems, to the way you approach decision making. According to several 2008 Aberdeen reports, employee engagement was a key quality that Best-in-Class organizations attributed to their success - so, apparently, there is something different about engaged employees.

It’s difficult for coaches and organizations alike to be confident they are promoting true engagement or using the right processes or tools to make engagement a reality, so many research and analysis organizations have challenged themselves to learn more.  Aberdeen, an organization known for their probing research studies across all aspects of business and technology, has developed a research project that will hopefully provide more insight into this tricky subject. The research report, which will be published in July of 2009, will address the practices, strategies, capabilities and tools organizations use to improve and maintain employee engagement, and look at what Best-in-Class organizations are doing differently to reap the benefits of an engaged workforce.

There is a difference between knowing how engagement works and what engagement looks like, and knowing which tools and methods really promote employee engagement on an organizational and cultural level. If you are interested in helping to answer some of these questions about employee engagement, take the survey and then check back here for a summary of the results in July 09.
